Chinese Language Program For International Student

1. Introduction

The Chinese Language Program serves to promote the Chinese language throughout the world and to help people in other countries acquire a better understanding of China. The academic year is divided into two semesters: (1) spring semester: Feb-Jun; (2) autumn semester: Sep - Jan. Each semester consists of 18 weeks (20 class hours per week, 4 class hours per day, Monday to Friday). The courses are taught by instructors from The International Chinese Language & Culture Centre (ICLCC), Tsinghua University.

2. Courses

In order to accurately assess the Chinese proficiency of new students, ICLCC arranges a placement test at the beginning of each semester. Students will then be assigned to appropriate class levels (8 levels from elementary to heigh level) in accordance with their Chinese proficiencies. The curriculum of the program includes the following courses: Speaking, Listening, Comprehensive Chinese, Extensive Reading, Newspaper Reading, Writing, Comprehensive Chinese & Discussion. The program delivers 20 class hours per week. ICLCC also offers public elective courses and advanced required elective courses. Public elective courses include Chinese Character (elementary), Chinese Character (intermediate-advanced), Pronunciation (elementary), Pronunciation (intermediate-advanced), Chinese Calligraphy, Chinese Painting, Chinese Songs, HSK Lessons, Taiji, Chinese Martial Arts, Chinese Er-hu, etc. Advanced elective courses are only for students of advanced–level class, including Lectures on Chinese Culture, Business Chinese, Audio-Visual lessons, Classical Chinese, Grammar and Advanced Listening Comprehension.

ICLCC has explicit regulations on student attendance and exams. Only those meeting the requirements of the regulation can obtain their final grades and program certificate from the university.

3.Qualifications of Applicants

Any foreigner or compatriot from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan having a formal education background at the high school level or above, a good moral character, and being aged 18-55 and in good health.

4. Application Schedule

There are two semesters in one academic year. Applicants for the Spring Semester Program must complete their application during October 15th--December 15th of the previous year (holidays excluded). Those for the Fall Semester must complete their application during March15th--June 15th of the year (holidays excluded).

5. Application Procedure

Only after the following 3 steps are finished (step by step) before the deadline, can the application be regarded as completed. Otherwise you will be regarded as giving up this application. You need to check your email which you give in your application form and the email which you register as your username for on-line application, as well as application status and important notice via the On-line Application System regularly.

Step 1: On-line Application

Complete On-line Application on the website of Foreign Student Affairs Office (FSAO), Tsinghua University (http://is.tsinghua.edu.cn), submit your application, and wait for the verification. Print and sign the hard copy of the Application Form produced by the system after all the information submitted is verified (status is “verified”). If your on-line application status is “Unqualified”, you need to amend your application, submit again, and wait for the verification.

Step 2: Submit Documents

Submit the application materials listed in Section 6 (Documents to be submitted) to FSAO, Tsinghua University by one of the following ways: (Application documents will not be returned)

  1. Submit in person
  2. Post mail
  3. Send the scanned documents by email to chinese@tsinghua.edu.cn

Step 3: Pay Application fee

After your completed application documents are received by FSAO, Tsinghua University, your on-line application fee payment system will be activated so you may pay on-line. Or you may pay in person with cash or bank card.

Check or wireless transfer through banks is NOT acceptable.

6. Documents to be submitted

(1) The signed hard copy of the completed Foreigner’s Application Form produced by the system after your on-line application is verified (signed and with photo).

(2) Latest academic diploma (or enrollment certificate) and academic record (photocopy).

(3) A photocopy of the page with personal information and photo in the passport (must use ordinary passport). The applicants who have already been in China should also provide the copy of valid Visa or Residence Permit.

(4) The applicants who are studying at another university in China must submit a Transfer Certificate issued by the host university.

7. Review and Admission Notice

The applicants should check for application status and the final result via the On-line Application System. FSAO will issue Admission Notice, Form JW202 (Visa Application Form for Foreigners), dormitory reservation guide, and Form of Physical Examination Record for Foreigners (only for X Visa applicants) to those who are admitted by Tsinghua University in early July for Fall admission, or early January for Spring admission.

8. Visa Application and Admission Registration

The admitted students should bring their ordinary Passport, Admission Notice, Visa Application Form for Foreigners, the original Form of Physical Examination Record for Foreigners and Blood Test Record (only for X visa holders) to the Embassy or Consulate of the People's Republic of China to apply for a student visa. The students shall come to FSAO, Tsinghua University for enrollment registration during the registration dates indicated on the Admission Notice. The X visa holders must change their visa to Residence Permit within 30 days after arriving in China. Compatriots from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan should have valid entry permits.

9. Accommodation

There are not enough dormitories for all international students. If your dormitory reservation that made during the dates indicated on the dormitory reservation guide is successful, you may live in the international student dormitory. There are single bed rooms (with private bathroom), AB rooms (single bed room, but 2 persons share one bathroom), and double bed rooms (public bathroom for each floor) in international student dormitories. The dormitories are equipped with air conditioner, telephone, TV, Internet access and furniture.

If your dormitory reservation is not successful, you need to find off campus living place by yourself.

10. Costs (in RMB Yuan)

(1) Application fee (non-refundable): RMB 400

(2) Tuition fee: RMB 12,600 (per semester)

(3) Accidental injury and hospitalization insurance: RMB 300 (per semester)

(4) On campus international student dormitory: RMB80/day/person for single bed rooms and AB rooms; RMB40/day/person for double bed rooms.
