Master in Environmental Engineering and Management1. IntroductionTsinghua University has a long and distinguished record in education and research in the field of environmental science and engineering. The discipline of environmental engineering can be traced back to 1928, when it was known as Sanitation Engineering. Today, the School of Environment (SOE) ranks as the top school in the field of environmental education and research in China and is authorized as a national key base for environmental research and education by the State Council. Research and teaching are conducted in the area of water/wastewater treatment, air pollution control, solid waste management, environmental chemistry, microbiology, environmental management and policy, etc. At present, there are about 80 faculty members in the SOE. Most of them have overseas study or work experiences and play an important role in many national and international environmental organizations. With the fast pace of industrialization and economic development in China, different environmental issues are constantly surfacing. As environmental pollution continues to degrade our environment and further affects sustainable economic and social development, the Chinese government has been allocating increased amounts of capital towards pollution control. Environmental protection is becoming an increasingly important aspect of all decision making. A huge environmental industry is emerging in China. Current circumstances present a tremendous challenge and opportunity for environmental professionals to further develop the discipline of Environmental Science and Engineering in order to meet the world’s pressing environmental needs. 2. International Master ProgramIn an effort to develop technical and sustainable solutions in a rapidly changing world, the International Master Program in Environmental Engineering and Management focuses on two main areas: 1) Environmental engineering and science 2) Environmental management and planning The program is designed to provide students with solid theoretical and systematic specialized knowledge as well as practical skills in the field of environmental engineering and management. In addition, the program aims to prepare students for the forefront of environmental engineering and management with a combination of coursework and research components. A key distinguishing feature of this program is its highly flexible curriculum, which enables students to pursue either an intensive or comprehensive course of study. 3. Courses StructureStudents are required to take Chinese and specialized courses and participate in internships and academic activities. The normal period of this program is 2 years. The program provides a comprehensive professional education and opportunities for research in the areas of water/wastewater treatment, air pollution control, solid waste control, environmental chemistry, environmental microbiology, environmental planning and management, environmental policy, etc. The courses are scheduled to permit either intensive study in a single area or interdisciplinary study between areas. Comprehensive introductory courses are given to provide a common basis of understanding among those with varied backgrounds. Students select specialized courses in consultation with the graduate coordinator or a faculty advisor to meet his/her academic and career goals. An internship is designed for students to gain professional experiences in either a company or environmental protection organization in China. 4. InternshipBased on the coursework, the two-year Master program requires an internship/on-spot survey. During the on-spot survey, the student will design and conduct a scientific survey on China-specific issues with the help of supervisors. A diverse number of practice opportunities are available in water plants, wastewater treatment plants, waste treatment and recycling facilities, environmental companies, environmental protection bureaus, multinational corporations and other national or international organizations. During the on-spot survey, students will be exposed to methods and techniques used by natural and social scientists to identify, analyze and interpret environmental problems. The on-spot survey will be in Beijing or in other parts of China, and will usually be conducted in the summer after the first academic year. 5. ThesisStudents are required to conduct an independent research project supervised by a faculty member with an interest in the particular topic or issue of their own research.
