Master of Public Administration in International Development

About the Program

The Master of Public Administration in International Development (MID) degree program is designed to prepare students to become active global citizens and to enhance their understanding of China’s development experience. The program focuses on public policy from an international perspective, combining rigorous training in analytical and quantitative methods with an emphasis on Chinese practices and sustainable development. In addition, the program provides graduate students with field experiences in a range of disciplines, including agriculture, policy, health, engineering, management, environmental science, education, and nutrition.

School of Public Policy and Management (SPPM) has strong academics to support high-level courses and research.  The faculty is from the fields of political science, economy, public policy/management, law and social science.  Forty-four percent of our faculty members obtained PhD degrees from top overseas universities.  Currently, the school is affiliated with six permanent research centers and more than a dozen research centers and institutes based on projects.

In 2009, Tsinghua University has been selected by the new Master’s of Development Practice (MDP) program created by the MacArthur Foundation, as one of first 11 universities worldwide, and the only university in China to launch a master program with the goal of cultivating a new generation of international development professionals.

Our MID students come from 41 countries with diverse backgrounds in public policy, engineering, political science, business, economy and other disciplines.  Seventy-nine students are enrolled in our program; another 71 students have graduated and committed themselves to the field of development worldwide.

Tuition and Fee

The MID program is a full-time program of 24 months that is taught entirely in English. The tuition for the program is 120,000 RMB, not including fees. Accidental Injury and Hospitalization Insurance is 600 RMB per year.

Basic Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent

Excellent command of English

Work experience in development fields desirable

Application Documents

(1) The completed Foreigner's Application Form for Admission to Graduate Programs of Tsinghua University, signed by the applicant (original)

(2) Personal statement

(3) The original or the notarized degree certificate or proof of education in academic institution (need to submit original or notarized degree certificate after being awarded), and academic transcript (original). The degree certificate and academic transcript must be officially sealed.

(4) Two academic recommendation letters from scholars of associate professor or higher (original)

(5) One recent photo of the applicant (cap-free, 2 inches, stick on the application form)

(6) One copy of the page with personal information in the passport (personal and ordinary passport)

(7) For non-native English speakers, please provide English level certificates (TOEFL 85 or IELTS 6.5).

(8) Completed Foreigner’s Application Form for Tsinghua University Scholarship (if applicable, original)

(9) The application fee is RMB 600 (non-refundable).

The certificate and transcript submitted should be the original documents in English or in Chinese, otherwise notarized translations in English or Chinese are required

*None of the above application documents will be returned.

Procedure

Step 1: Online Application

Complete online application on the website of Foreign Student Affairs Office, Tsinghua University (http://intlstudent.cic.tsinghua.edu.cn).  Print and sign the hard copy of the application form produced by the system after the application status changes to “verified”.

Download and complete the Foreigner's Application Form for Tsinghua University Scholarship at http://intlstudent.cic.tsinghua.edu.cn/EN/admission.htm  (if you intend to apply).

Step 2: Document Submission

Submit the application documents listed above to the address indicated below by post mail or in person.

Step 3:Application Fee Payment

Two ways to pay application fee:

1.  Pay online using credit card

After your application form is approved or the materials are received by Tsinghua University, the staff will send you the online payment draft while an email is sent to remind you to pay the application fee via the online application system.

2.  Pay in cash at the Foreign Student Affairs Office (Room 120, Zijing Building 22) of Tsinghua University.

Admission Schedule

Phase 1: November 12011  -- December 31, 2011

Phase 2January 1, 2012 -- February 29, 2012

Both the Online Application and a complete set of application documents should be completed and the package should be received by February 29, 2012.  Members of SPPM’s Academic Committee will carefully review and rank all the applications based on their qualifications. 

Scholarships

A limited number of scholarships are available on a competitive basis, which are Chinese Government Scholarship, Beijing Government Scholarship/Tsinghua Scholarship, School of Public Policy and Management Scholarship. The information about scholarships is available at http://intlstudent.cic.tsinghua.edu.cn. Please note that scholarship will be only considered when the application documents listed above have been fully received by the MID Program Office.

Please note that for the Government or University scholarship applicants, the online application and all the application documents should be submitted before December 31, 2011. The application deadline for SPPM scholarship is February 29, 2012. Applicants must complete the Foreigner’s Application Form for Tsinghua University Scholarship and submit it to the MID Program Office by the deadline with the other application documents.  

Enrollment

MID 2012 students will enroll in the program in August, 2012.
